Google map of quality cafes

HI all, Just wanted to let folks know of a map I curate in my spare time of quality cafes. Most of these I've been to, although I will also add places that are recommended by knowledgeable friends or get a good write-up in e.g. Sprudge. Hopefully useful if you find yourself in a new part of the world

2016 Northern California Meet Up- Spring

I'd love to join. Don't have anything too interesting to bring. "Lamorinda" means Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda?

New group gasket on Rancilio Silvia leaks--why?

Thanks to all for the thoughts. I'm already tightening the PF hard enough that I need to brace the machine with my forearm, and honestly am afraid of breaking something, so I think the next step is to try another gasket. Any suggestions on where to get a thicker gasket? Here's what I bought: {link}

New group gasket on Rancilio Silvia leaks--why?

I should say, in my case I'm cranking the PF well past 6 o'clock, most of the way to the red dot at ~5 o'clock, so I don't think the gasket is too thick nor the basket too tall

New group gasket on Rancilio Silvia leaks--why?

Which way is correct? I bought OEM gaskets. One face is smooth, the other has the Rancilio logo and the letter "A" 180 degrees apart. I put the smooth side down (towards the basket). I'm wondering if water is leaking over the top of the gasket?

New group gasket on Rancilio Silvia leaks--why?

Eric, You saidandI guess I'm confused. Both of these statements imply the leaks come because the basket and the gasket are too close together. While I could see this causing leaks in an extreme case where you are barely engaging the PF and as a result it isn't held on straight, I'd think the opposit...

New group gasket on Rancilio Silvia leaks--why?

Thanks Eric. I did try the old basket and it also leaks. I'm using a bottomless PF, and the VST sits in there well. If anything it sits lower than my other basket, which would seem--to me anyway--to be more consistent with a leak than sitting higher. But I don't think that explains it because even w...

New group gasket on Rancilio Silvia leaks--why?

I recently bought a "VST 20g basket" for my 3YO Silvia. It immediately leaked over the top of the basket and down the outside. No problem, as I had been meaning to change the group gasket and had a new (OEM) one handy. The old one was hard as a rock, and the new one is nice and soft.

San Francisco HB get together

Probably not much easier (harder) to park near the ferry building without paying. If you're driving up from san jose, you could park at one of the distal bart stations (e.g. Daly city is right on the 280). Pretty sure parking is free in bart lots on the weekend. Then Bart to embarcadero for the ferr...

Will pay for barista training in San Francisco

I also would like to get better at using my Silvia (espressos suck at the moment). I have a grinder that I think is commensurate with the Silvia--LeLit PL53. I agree with the other comments that it is perhaps unrealistic to expect a pro barista to have much to offer. Maybe we Bay Area Silvia owners ...
