Water filters appropriate for espresso machines?

After lots of issues with water in the past, I want to get a more serious filter than the Brita pitcher. I will need to get one that attaches to faucet, rather than to plumbing b/c of apartment rules. Or if there is a great pitcher system (I have heard of a new one called Zero Water that

I would like to find out if, when you have a boiler made of anything besides aluminum (let us say it is stainless steel, brass or copper or those with some non-aluminum coating like nickel), is it still imperative to have a neutral pH (around 7)? Recommendations for inexpensive pH meter?

There are some from $28 to $40 on the low end I have seen online. I would like to get a recc for a reputable brand though--accuracy is important. I basically need an "instant read" type you just put in your water to read and which will read instantly as you add baking soda to adjust. I
