Moka pot question about the amount of coffee in the filter basket

It's always interesting to hear what Lucio has to say on the subject of moka pots. One other thing about reducing the dose is that you'll either have a weaker, waterier coffee or by filling the bottom with less water you'll change the brew profile (time and temperature). That's not to say it won't w...

Espresso tourism in and around Beverly Hills

If you had a berry bomb you'd know it. It's overwhelming. I actually don't care for them but they are definitely very striking. Rarer these days I think perhaps due to the changes that have taken place in Ethiopia. I had forgotten about Blue Bottle there on S. Beverly. Since they closed the Mint Pla...

Espresso tourism in and around Beverly Hills

I visited Aharon last week. I liked the vibe of the place. The person who helped me was very friendly. It was late enough in the day that I didn't get a cup of coffee but I did pick up a couple of bags of beans. The Yirgacheffe promised "rich, luxurious blueberries and blackberries". I wasn't counti...

Moka pot question about the amount of coffee in the filter basket

That's fair. I also started with a moka pot in the 90s. I can't remember where I got instructions for use. In fact for many years I filled above the safety valve. Everybody says not to do that but it worked fine with that particular pot. Nowadays you can find an abundance of often conflicting inform...

Moka pot question about the amount of coffee in the filter basket

Sometimes people just want opinions. But even when looking for concrete answers you still frequently get mostly opinions, particularly with something unusual. I doubt very many moka pot users try what you're asking about since the prevailing advice is to fill without tamping and level it. I did lots...

Moka pot question about the amount of coffee in the filter basket

I've always been told that the basket has to be full or else it doesn't work as well. There is at least one pot out there that has an insert to allow for half doses. If you could just load it half full that wouldn't be necessary. I think because it's upside down that the water coming from below

Moka pot question about the amount of coffee in the filter basket

They aren't scaled evenly. And if they were they would still be different because contact time in a scaled version would also be scaled. Imagine a 580mm diameter scaled portafilter. Or a 2 gallon sized V60

CO2 escape from a vacuum sealed roast

Over time, and especially with temperature changes, argon, CO2, nitrogen, and oxygen will all mix. The tendency for a vertical gradient due to gravity is insignificant over the distances inside a coffee container. Essentially they will mix evenly throughout the volume. Argon (atomic weight 40) isn't...

CO2 escape from a vacuum sealed roast

So one possibility is that the presence of O2 is somehow stimulating the release (or creation) of CO2. Another possibility is that pulling a vacuum removes a large amount of the CO2 (and other volatiles) present in the bean. It should be possible to tell the difference. For example, you could put pa...

How to store coffee beans?

That's pretty funny. It does make him seem a bit like a hippy. Reminds me of {video}. I wonder what George's hacky sack skill level is?
