Bad Coffee Taste: Bad Roast or Bad Beans?

Yeah, I do that, I'm hesitant to get Nicaraguan coffee ever again, but I was just thinking what if I'm unnecessarily avoiding it. I suppose either way if it's a bean that's really picky about the type of roast it requires it might not be that great of a choice for me. I've had a cuban coffee where it

Bad Coffee Taste: Bad Roast or Bad Beans?

I started home roasting maybe 9 months ago or so with an Air Roaster, since then I had purchased a Behmor 1600. Most of the stuff I roast turns out pretty good. My very first coffee I tried roasting (with air popper) was a nicoraguan. The first time I did it too dark, or so I

Is the first shot of the day really considered not as good?

I'd like to update my input on this topic. Previously I said that backflushing before pulling the first shot helps, which is probably true, but until recently I've usually only tasted my shots in milk, but when tasting them as straight espresso (with 4g of organic coconut sugar usually), I did notic...

Using an Infared Thermometer (with Behmor)

Thanks guys, I already purchased one because I was impatient and I figured it would be a cool toy to play around with either way. I'll let you know if it works ok for coffee roasting

Baratza Vario spraying = bad shot?

For darker (and oily) beans you can get away with grinding coarser, for lighter roasted beans they need a more fine grind. I think the grinder or beans break up differently depending on the roast level, so if it was working the way you liked with the darker beans then it sprayed and you got a gusher...

Fungicide in monsooned beans?

Yeah I remember reading somewhere that they use some sort of fungicide (not sure where) but for that reason I've been a bit afraid of trying monsooned beans. Even if roasting destroys the fungicide, if you roast indoors, you might be inhaling the burning fungicide residues, the good news is you won'...

Baratza Vario spraying = bad shot?

I've noticed when grinding for espresso, really really finely, where the burrs are almost touching. Sometimes it comes out in clumps, is that what you were getting sometimes? It grinds a bit slower and clumpy but doesn't spray, and then one day out of nowhere it grinds nice fluffy loose grinds which...

Using an Infared Thermometer (with Behmor)

I was just wondering if anyone had thought of the idea of using a infrared thermometer to monitor roast temperatures of the bean. There's fairly cheap one's available online. Has anyone tried it? Especially with the Behmor. Just wondering if it's worth trying. Visibility is limited in a behmor and t...

I got a Behmor 1600

Yeah, the gasket looks fine, ill give it a wipe to make sure it's clean but looks pretty good. It gets all distorted /wavy when its heated up, (which it says is normal in the manual). A few times I have opened the door when first crack started, only for a few seconds though. I have been using
