Strange pour over device

Today, a friend of mine was in Orange County, California at Portola Coffee labs in Costa Mesa. And he sent me this picture of these strange looking mushroomy devices. These look like something from the 50s movie "war of the worlds" for those of you old enough to have seen it. Obviously have something to do with pour over.

Interesting. I like some of the humor in the FAQ. Portola must have some beta units as mentioned on the website. I wonder what happened, because the last update appears to be from three years ago.
