I think the basket makes a big difference - if you have too big a basket for the dose the bed of grounds will be thinner and it will make a difference. For me a "double basket" ( Espresso Parts HQ 21+g Ridgeless Basket) worked much better than the triple that came with bottomless pf. A bottomless portafilter will help you get better extractions, because you will get better a preparing your puck, and will see your mistakes.

https://www.breville.com/us/en/products ... es870.html says 54mm

So if you buy Bottomless Portafilter you can use 54mm Dalla Corte basket

My BES878 uses the same size portafilters and baskets. The portafilter itself won't make a taste difference but if you are using the original stock portafilter, I would recommend you remove the plastic insert if you haven't already done so.

The baskets definitely make a difference; whether that is better or worse is somewhat subjective. I use the IMS Precision baskets for the Breville line and find it to be better as I have been able to grind finer.

One thing to keep in mind if you pull both singles and doubles on a regular basis is there is no single IMS basket for the BES line. It took me a little while to figure out the right grind settings with different basket types when alternating. In the end, I wound up lowering my typical dosage on the single. Using a paper filter underneath also worked but I got tired of cutting and wasting all that paper.

Which double basket do u recommend ?? As I like to do single shots easier for when I have guests so I will keep the portafilter it came with and just change the basket if it will make a difference??

Two different baskets or two different doses will almost always require a change of grind. Pulling a double and splitting it (after stirring) may be faster and use less coffee overall.

I have the bes870 .
Is the 18 to 22 for triples usually ?
Why remove the plastic insert ? That's the one under the basket ?
My basket pretty much looks the same as the ims precision ones u posted. I assume there is still differences ??

Yes, the plastic insert I'm referring to is the one under the basket. It serves no functional purpose and adds a layer of plastic that hot coffee flows through unnecessarily. It's a layer that can affect taste, erode or change over time, and possibly also collect residue. Think about how a plastic mug would be over time after daily use for hot coffee.

If you google "youtube precision espresso baskets", you can find lots of folks who consider them important. Here's one from James Hoffmann
I use the 14-18 which matches the stock double unpressurized basket that came with my Breville machine. If you find it too small, then you're probably looking for the 18-22
