I always put the pouch in a waterjug (like the one from Brita) and kept that in the refrigerator. When the water level in the tank gets low just refill and refill the jug and put it back. That way you always have descaled water.
Finally went to get this pouch, instead of trying to mod the water tank valve. Sink it in a 3L jug like Erik's (but unfridged) and worry less about the scale problem. Yay!

How to check if I will need to do a descale?

For the E61 I had, I could check the mushroom on the grouphead.
Any place I can unplug to take a look?

Pull the waterlevel probe out of the boiler and have a look inside. That will give you the answer. You can always descale the HX as with any other HX machine but for a full descale check the boiler.

You can do this by just taking off the top cover.

How do you just descale the HX?

I've this concept that I will have to heat up the machine, remove all the water.
Fill it with descaling solution and rinse it with clean water.

Is this considered a full descale or just the HX?

Fill the reservoir with descaling solution and run it through the machine with the pump turned on so it flushes through the HX. Just make sure the boiler fill doesn't kick in. It's the same way as every E61 HX can be descaled. A full descale will take at lot more time and effort.
