I've been using felt pads on the bottom of the legs for about 4 years with no issues. The machine glides across the granite countertop.

In the past I've just used a folded towel or dish cloth. Allows you to slide the machine around and has the added bonus of soaking up any spills if it happens.

You could also use a turntable, but its free movement may make locking in portafilters a bit cumbersome.
