Americans tend to get into espresso later in life, and usually exposed thru higher-end channels [emphasis added].
Which is what mainly accounts for the different tastes and needs for sugar. Italian roasters blend and roast for a market that will add sugar. The highest-end American roasters tend to blend and roast for a "sugar-optional" market.

For my own tastes, I like an espresso made from beans with a naturally sweet mouthfeel, such as Redbird or Black Pearl. (Drinking an absolutely fabulous Black Pearl macchiato right now, and IMHO, sugar added would kill the slightly sweet nutty 'kick' at the end of the cup. (Think toasted almonds.. mmmmm good)!!

oh no. I always consume french fries straight (that means with salt); eventually, sometimes with some exotic stuff (like the time I ordered a plate of fries in turkish restaurant... imagine the looks on their faces - I ordered only fries... :D ) or with ketchup, but then I want to have a bit of ketchup aside as option to put a fry to it if I want.
Espresso - no sugar. But I do add odd things like ginger or honey.

Yeahbut, IIRC, the OP was asking if it was OK for someone to put sugar in their espresso, not in *your* espresso.

I believe the consensus (with a few religiously motivated outliers) is that you can have your espresso with sugar if you like it that way.

:)
yes you're right
the fries hijacked my mind to my fries and my espresso.
anyway, the very first moments with espresso in my life, I was putting quite a lot of brown sugar in it (it was even before I started having it at home) - then only I unlearned this by courage and experience.
This was the days when espresso in Coffeeheaven (a chain of cafes in eastern europe) was very good.
