one of my favorite things to say while ordering at a cafe.
PBTC: can i help you?
ME: yeah can i please have a ... whatever?
PBTC: do you want any flavor in that?
ME: yes.. coffee flavor please.
PBTC: ::looking confused:: we dont have coffee flavor...
god i love it.. i have not been in a cafe in a while so i dont get a chance to do it as much anymore.. i am hoping that while i am in san francisco for macworld, someone will ask me if i want flavor in my coffee.

Having obtained my espresso addiction in Provence, I tend to follow the European norm of adding sweetener. I used turbinado for a long time, but switched to Splenda a few years back when I decided I needed to cut down my sugar intake. It's definitely the best of the artificials.
I can't remember the quote, exactly, but I enjoyed reading Ken Davids' description of the "puritanical tic" of refusing sugar that seems unique to the US.

Sugar purists may disagree but adding it removes some of the true taste of espresso for me.
I prefer to concentrate on the espresso itself, especially when drinking it through the day. Adding sugar would inevitably have diet implications down the line...

Sometimes a slice or two of fresh ginger root is nice.
