OK, I chickened out and just ordered the Ethiopia from HappyMug - I'm pretty sure it will just be another OK-meh roast, but it won't hurt so bad due to the price. I did also add their new limited supply Columbia passionfruit co-fermentation bean (4oz only bags), so will let everyone know what happens with this one.

I'll let someone else try one of the earlier beans first... :D

The 'bir bir' from vivace in the spring was big clean cherry goodness. That's the last big fruit coffee they've had, and they had maybe 10 bags for sale.

I'm lucky I only buy new stuff that I can taste first. I imagine I'd be pretty frustrated ordering random stuff off the internet.

Super sorry to hear about verve, my friend brought me a bag of sermon 10 years ago and it was wonderful.

I order natural Ethiopians regularly from Happy Mug and this is my mentality toward them. In my experience, the blueberry bomb flavor profile is rare and elusive, so I don't expect it regardless of the roaster's description. When I get it, it's an outlier, and I've gotten those stellar outliers more often from Happy Mug than others I've tried. So I'm willing to roll the dice with Happy Mug because I know I'm going to at least get a baseline generic natural Ethiopian, which is a profile I still enjoy, and I'm going to pay a reasonable price for it.

I do miss Klatch's Ethiopian Gedeo Worka; it was a true blueberry bomb. The new anaerobic processing just isn't cutting it for me.

I've had this Jairo Arcila Colombia from tenfold coffee in Houston a couple of times this summer and it's been a definite berry bomb - more strawberry than blueberry. I think they did a really good job on this one and I've really enjoyed it as pour over and drip. It was a bit much for me as espresso but I didn't want to waste a lot of it dialing in.

Not straight blueberry. It reminds me of the blueberry bombs of past with the intense fruit in that direction, but without the over-ripe base notes. Like the bag says, grape bubble gum and strawberry.

What did you think of the co-fermented beans? I ordered 3 of the 4 oz bags because in the past I've really enjoyed some of the limited offerings like that, but I found it to be just about undrinkable. I have no other experience with cofermentation so it's possible I don't enjoy coffee processed that way, but there was an utter lack of any fruity notes to it.

Processing with big marketing words is "in" right now. In the grand scheme of things, processing that is not traditional for the region, beans, and producer has a greater likelihood of making bin juice than tasty fruits. Traditionally processed commodity and cheap specialty coffee that is reasonable is easy to source. Tasty "experimental" processing will require a roaster that can be trusted to select good greens, preserve them and roast them properly.
