  • -Menagerie (18 S 3rd St, Phila, PA 19106)
-Elixr (207 S. Sydenham St, Phila, PA 19102)
    -Square One (249 S 13th St Phila, PA 19107 and 1811 JFK Blvd, 19103)
    -Ultimo (1900 S 15th St, Phila, PA 19145 & 2149 Catharine St, 19146) - owned & operated by Aaron Ultimo, a WBC judge, & his wife
-Reanimator (310 W Master St, Phila, PA 19122)
-Rival Brothers (2400 Lombard St, Phila, PA 19146)
-Shot Tower (542 Christian St, Phila, PA 19147)
Give a special shout out to The Monkey and the Elephant (2831 W Girard Ave, Phila, PA 19130). M&E is the vision of Lisa Miccolis, who's devoted years of her life to kids who age out of the foster care system. It turns out (at least here in PA) that once you turn 18, you're on your own - and many kids find themselves truly alone, with no guidance or mentor and no knowledge, skill or experience with which to be self sufficient. Lisa is a long time coffee nut, a highly skilled barista, and an all around great person who decided years ago to create a program that would teach these kids coffee as a business in order to give them a framework on which to build a life as an adult. M&E is it, and it's both a great little shop and a truly valuable place for all of us to support.
I'm going here in a couple weeks but only have time for 2-3 stops. What would you say is your top 3, in order for espresso/lattes?

The Monkey and the Elephant seems like a great thing. Thanks for posting this. I missed it when it was first posted.

Square One has been my default since it opened (my office was a few blocks away - my secretary used to schedule meetings for me there :). They now have a second location on JFK Blvd between 18th & 19th that's every bit as good as the 13th St shop.

Ultimo is wonderful if you can get to South Philly (also with 2 locations), and Reanimator is equally great if you head north from center city into Fishtown. But any of the listed places is consistently excellent and we go to all of them at least a few times a season. My wife & I had coffee at the 13th St Sq1 this morning.

Peddler is also great (near the Franklin Institute).

Compass Coffee Roasters (not the same company as Compass Coffee in DC) has a location in Portland OR, and 2 just a hop across the river in Vancouver WA. IMO, one of the best among the many good places in the Portland metro area.

7 Days a Week 6am to 8pm

Compass on Cook
3290 North Vancouver & Cook Portland, OR 97227
Mon-Fri 7am to 6pm Sat & Sun 7am to 7pm

Roastery | Coffeehouse | Tasting Lab
8013 St Johns Rd Suite P Vancouver, WA 98665
Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm

Also Nossa Familia in Portland -- also outstanding.

Thanks! I checked out most of those and último was fantastic. Bad experiences at the others for my palate at least. Thanks!

Heading to Seattle in 2wks and consulted the map; seems to be lacking: only café Vita and Stumptown listed. Can anyone familiar with Seattle chime in and recommend some of the best cafe's in the downtown area to add to this?

Slate has a cafe at the southern end of downtown near the stadiums and Pioneer Square. Elm Roasters is right near there, but I've never been there. There's a Victrola just across the freeway from downtown near the infamous and lavish Starbucks Reserve. La Marzocco in the Seattle Center. More on Capitol Hill nearby, among other places. There is plenty of talk here about Seattle.

Two good shops in Vegas:

Mothership Coffee Roasters
Green Valley Plaza, 2708 N Green Valley Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89014

Vesta Coffee Roasters
1114 S Casino Center Blvd #1, Las Vegas, NV 89104

Vegas is definitely still in it's infancy with coffee roasting... Magnum Coffee Roasters is opening a location down here soon, and Sambalatte is well known in the area and also roasts (but I'm not as big of a fan... will have to check them out again).
