Neglecting your two recommendations, especially Filter, could have caused me bodily harm if same was noticed by another family member. And to top it off, the owner of Filter, Rasheed, is a Silver Spring, MD resident. Both Filter and Cafe Pronto were unintentional omissions.

Hyperion has been added. :)

As a (almost obvious) note, recommendations get edited into the original post such that one need not drive through the entire thread to get a good list.

Another shop that escaped my fading memory - however they meet all of the original criteria and have been edited into the original list.

I will make it a point to visit tomorrow to ensure they still have their 3-group spring lever Rancilio. In addition, they are located in the "basement" of a most enjoyable DC bookstore - Politics and Prose.

edit on 3/4/11 - I changed this to a 3-group and yes, the coffee is very good. They are using beans from Cafe Pronto in Annapolis.

And, within the past couple of days, a new shop opened up just around the corner from Peregrine. It is "Pound the Hill" and has been added to the original list.

And now, two more adds to the list in the original post:

M.E. Swing - the oldest roaster (1916) in the DC area
Big Bear Cafe - a friendly neighborhood shop

Past Saturday I went back to the Lost Dog and had a caramel latte, before I was 20 feet I decided to finish the one I had and get a double espresso for the ride home. I figure it's an hour away for me so why not treat myself I deserve it. Staff at the Lost Dog are Awesome....

I just pulled together a Google Map of the listings in the first post and will try to keep it updated based on this thread. Eric, if you PM/email me your email address I'll add you as a collaborator on the map.

The map is here. You should be able to add it to your "My Maps" if you're a gmail user and it will become available as a "My Maps" layer on your mobile device if using Google Maps mobile.

Thanks for the submissions!

Boccato (clarendon... I think they're opening a new shop in Alexandria soon) might be a good addition to your list. They serve stumptown. I wouldn't put them up there with peregrine, but they've been much better than Swing's IME. If I had to rate it, depending on who's working, quality is about on par with Northside Social.
