Comes from the chemistry lab, using fritted glass as a filter. The siphon, the balance brewer, the Chemex, they all look like they came right out of the chemistry lab. I've even seen posts of people using a Büchner funnel to brew coffee.

I was tempted to raid my Wife's classroom for glassware once, she's a science teacher.

I've been siphon / vacuum pot brewing for probably 15 years and I've always used a Cory Rod. Never used a filer. The great joy of this type of brewing is that you get good temp control, movement of the grounds during brewing, and the coffee never touches anything but glass and water. Cory rods can be a little fickle - some work better than others, but it's good to see more offerings with this same type of design.
