Excellent but very soft, ppm much below SCA water standard. (At least when I checked last).

Hi,

i did an initial test. I flushed my filter with boling water, tapped off water. added 60 grams of coffee, inserted temp probe and flicked the power switch (1 liter of water). When first drop of hot water hit the grounds i started the timer.

2:04 it reached 92 degrees C (197.6 F.)
02:30 it reached 94 degrees C (201.2F)
03:54 it reached 95 degrees C (203 F)

This brewer then fails to meet SCA requirements. http://www.scaa.org/?page=cert2
I am not sure if it is because of the 9 hole showerhead as opposed to single hole. the brewer came straight from the shop with this showerhead.

I normally brew at 95C / 203F.

I will rerun the test by brewing 0,5 liter of water in empty filter to try and help the brewer.
my room temperature is 22 C / 71.6F.

this is abit on the low side of my expectations.

Running 0,5 liter on empty filter as preheat before starting a normal brew routine makes no difference.
I then tried measuring with an empty filter. 45,5 seconds to reach the sca requirements of "92 degrees C within 1 minute"
The final brew holds 87 degrees C.
My room temperature today is actually 23,4 degrees C..

Considering how the moccamaster works im kinda short of a logical explanation other than design flaw on my moccamaster causing too much heat-loss ? Have they made revisions lately ? (cost savings in production with lesser insulation)
Im suspecting the showerhead multi-hole version.

i ran the 3 tests with the lid on the filter holder.

2 very skilled baristas confirmed this temprature profile to be very desirable. Much better than what i wanted it to be. Got eira bottled water and a new filter brand. Starting again from zero. I am most likely doing some rookie mistake that i am ignoring / overlooking.

Filtropa is generally considered the go-to brand for filters.

Temperature looks ok to me.

Do you mind posting some photos of before and after of your coffee bed?

This is from one of my brews:

The same water you use for good french press should be fine in the technivorm. The grind needs to be a bit finer than french press but not close to espresso. If you brew with french press courseness, you should get very weak tasting coffee, but it will smell good, not bad. It seems like you've already covered these factors.

When you run a brew cycle with no coffee and no paper filter, do you notice any off-odors? There shouldn't be any. If it smells bad, then where is the odor coming from? Is it the plastic basket, or does the water pick up something when it runs through the brewer?

If this unit is new and I were you, I would exchange it for another one. You're correct that it should be easy to brew good drip coffee from the TV.

If the unit is not new and was in storage somewhere and not completely drained, perhaps there's mold, algea or some other contamination inside that needs to be cleaned out.

I am drinking coffee from moccamaster. i got it replaced. i did not test brewing just water since it was new from a serious vendor. The grind is off but i am enjoying it. pure over extraction. i have never enjoyed over-extracted coffee this much before.

Have i been drinking algea, mold or cockroach i do not know and i am glad i do not know either..

Thank you for making me stay on track.

I'm glad it works better now. I wonder what was wrong?
