I had actually considered designing a part which would be hinged on the polycarbonate lid and stop popcorning when the lid is closed as you mentioned above. But haven't gotten around to it yet.
Yeah, that is exactly why I do it.

If you had to choose between (1) the Niche Zero and (2) the Baratza Sette 270 Wi, which one would you choose, and why?

How do (1) and (2) compare with respect to:

- grind quality;
- espresso range;
- filter range;
- loudness;
- build quality;
- burr quality;
- ease of use.

To me this is not much of a debate. I sold the Sette (not the W version) to get the Niche and think the Niche is better in literally every category mentioned above. The only reason I would consider the Sette Wi over the Niche is if I wanted to keep a hopper full of beans and still do weight based dosing.

I was thinking about some type of auger attached to the top burr bolt.

I have not received the NZ yet, but I was wondering if an o-ring of the right size, just a little smaller that then the internal diameter of the dial ring and attached to the lid, would work.

So the consensus is that the Pringle's lid or similar offers no mitigation of potential grind size distribution issues related to popcorning?

I love posts like this. Seriously, if you can blind taste the difference between the Niche with and without a Pringles lid; stop posting here, and get a million dollar a year job as the nose at some perfumerie or distillery. If you think any of us can taste such differences; somebody has sold you a bill of goods.

At most I've had four or five beans start popcorning and those resolved themselves almost immediately. I don't know how much that could affect the taste or particle distribution.

Pretty new to espresso prep and extraction theory so frankly that's a relief to hear. (Note that my post was indeed a question :D )
