Just to add that not only do you get software/firmware improvements, but recently John and team sent out actual physical hardware update packs to all of us early adopters at no cost. Among other things this included a more accurate flow-meter. Pretty cool!!

There are some comments about the pumps and noise they make. I would like to provide some feedback on this, as when I first saw some of the youtube videos about the DE last summer I was also surprised by the unique noise the pumps made. What I have come to learn, I am no expert though, is that the pumps and how they are controlled - resulting in the unique sound - really is the secret sauce of the Decent Espresso. The DE is controlling the pumps to accurately mix hot water and room temperature water in such a way to accurately match the goal temp being set by the profile being executed. There is actually a physics model, created by Ray, inside the firmware that uses modeling of temperature changes and sensor feedback to control the hot water pump and room water pump accurately. The firmware is also controlling the pumps in order to dictate how much flow should be provided based on the needs of the shot.
Without the use of vibratory pumps, controlled in this manner, it just isn't possible to provide the kind of control over pressure, flow, and temperature at the rate that the DE can manipulate them (flow adjusted around 2000/sec).
As an owner, the pumps sound don't bother me at all. It is a little bit like the sound your car makes, you learn exactly what is happening just by sound as your familiarity grows.

Enjoying the adventure is as rewarding as the destination.

In order to keep this thread from straying too far off track, I will answer it in a new thread: DE1 extraction recipeswgmcg wrote:I've not yet ever gotten a shot out of the DE1 that looks even close to anything like the one in your video. What's the recipe?

does it work with the Acaia Lunar or only with the Skale?RapidCoffee wrote:With a Bluetooth scale (such as the Skale), you can terminate the shot at a desired extraction weight rather than a prespecified time. To achieve a 1:2 brew ratio with a 17g dose, you would specify an extraction weight of 34g. The shot will end when the scale registers 34g or the decline phase reaches 35s, whichever comes first.

The DE machines do not connect to Acaia scales. Their BT protocol is proprietary and has expensive licensing.cafemolino wrote:does it work with the Acaia Lunar or only with the Skale?
Currently, your option is the Skale and soon (April or May?) the DE BT Scale.

sad really sad, Acaia could make better, if I get a decent sooner or later for sure, but what I do with the lunar? would be nice to share the lunar with the cremina SEP and decent

One point we haven't spent a lot of time mentioning, but is clearly worthy of noticing is how fast the DE machines can change temps for playing around with various coffees or narrowing in on a desired cup result with just one coffee. A feat not easily achieved by other machines as quickly. In addition, the precision in which temp is measured as close to the coffee is quite unique, and better IMO.
The low mass of the DE group head certainly makes it act more like a caravel to a galleon or barge.

well I would say that this machine is the next Cremina generation in/with technical features.
just superb to anything else what is available at the moment that is not mechanical controlled

The DE1 resembles the Cremina in compact size, but not much else. I'm not aware of anything comparable to the DE1 at this time.cafemolino wrote:well I would say that this machine is the next Cremina generation in/with technical features.
But future machines may be referred to as next-gen DE1's. There's far too much compelling technology introduced by the DE1, for it to go unnoticed by the major espresso machine manufacturers.
