IMHO, tamper compresses, WDT distributes. They're both important but, in my experience, a tamped even distribution is more important to an even extraction than a very even tamp over a not so evenly distributed dose. For me a WDT spin breaks down and evenly distributes a grind in a more uniform way than a leveling finger or tapping the portafilter can.

Fine accupunture needles and wine corks make great cost effective tools. Got my life time supply of WDT accupunture needles on Amazon.

I use a Bravo tamper and I really like it. I got it because I noticed I was tamping unevenly. The Bravo takes care of that and is built to last.
