Rotating WDT tool - Page 3
I bought the v1, and I received a v2 update, the person that makes the tool is quite nice. I thought the v1 worked well. It didn't have a depth adjustment so I trimmed the needles. I followed the directions and rotated it 20+ times and it was as good as traditional WDT, at least for me.
The gears didn't quite fit right in my v1 which is why the seller sent me the v2. V2 is much nicer to use. I liked the v1 because I could just put in on a basket and use it - for the v2 I have to place it on a portafilter - not a big deal. It feels nice to use the handle to spin.
I bought it because the design is appealing and I thought it would help me get more consistent than my freestyle WDT. It might just take me a bit of time to get used to it.
Edit - I also like it because I can dump the grounds from dosing cup and then use this instead of also having to reach for a funnel before WDT. I don't think I would have been looking for something like this if I dosed straight into the portafilter.

Update after use of V2 of this tool. It was easy to use and created a nice flat bed of grounds. I didn't have any weird channeling or inconsistency from the shot. The shot did appear to pull a bit faster. Flavor was spot on. As I said before I don't normally use Wdt because of my grinder choice, and a funnel doesn't fit during grinding. I'd have to buy a funnel and place it after grinding, not a big deal but another expense. This tool just plops down on top the portafilter which is nice.
There was no mess to speak of, in the first gen grounds would get caught in the device. I'll probably give this tool to my sister who has a difficult time getting Wdt done well. This should make it easier for her and her husband.

Family, coffee and fun.
U must have gotten the prototype one that only rotates in an anti clockwise wise direction. I went for the newer version but I am still waiting for it...Plinyyounger wrote:I have to post an update to be fair. The designer sent me the new iteration since I was disappointed in the first one they designed. It is much better designed to say the least. It fits the portafilter better, the needles adjust pretty easily and the rotation goes in either direction. So I'll try it in the morning and let you know if the shots(s) pull evenly.

Edit - seller reached out on Etsy and is sending a new unit, he mentioned he's been using a new printer as well so the finishing on the current units is better. He agreed something was wrong with the one I received, somehow there was shrinkage which would exlain my issue as even he said there should only be a 1mm max space from the wall. He's sending a new unit. Hopefully this fixes it as the design I can totally see working awesome, if I didn't have that huge gap.Plinyyounger wrote:Update after use of V2 of this tool. So I bought the V2 and mehhh, it noticeably channels and spritzes more on various baskets and grinders. There's huge gap all around that needles don't touch vs normal wdt tool where you against the walls of the basket. Like let's say you have a mound and just place it on, it'll only wdt the center area and leave a wall of coffee on a side or all around (that normal wdt would obviously take care of).
In theory the tool is cool, but it needs to be redesigned to come to at least almost touching the walls. It "looked" like an end game wdt tool, adjust needles and leave perfectly evenly distributed bed but it misses a chunk around the circumference.
Like you said with it pulling faster makes sense as the center area is distributed, vs the outter section that isn't. I just checked with calipers so basket is 58mm, the needles on this tool at widest section are only about 45mm. So about a 6.5mm gap around that isn't touched.
I still haven't received mine yetso it aopears to have gottrn lost somewhere in internationnal mail. The seller has promised to send me another one so I will report on it if and when I finally receive it.

Seller sent me the updated one, V3 now. This one is great, it works awesome and smooth and easy to adjust needles. The V2 I had something was off, he and I think somehow printer shrinkage, the V3 is much better quality as well.

You have to give Douglas credit for designing something that looks amazing, no doubt well built and thought out. I wish he would make products for 54mm PF's.
