I do not have an espresso machine, but I would like to upgrade my grinder from my current 3 year old capresso infinity to something with a tighter distribution of grind size.

I could afford a $300-400 grinder now, or something more expensive later. I will eventually get an espresso maker, unless I quit my job and go become a pro barista...

If you want the best grind possible for price, I'd go for a Bunzilla.

Yes, it's a Bunn G series with the ditting burr conversion.
I believe the Grindmaster 890 uses ditting burrs too.
A search will reveal many posts and opinions on it.

For the price you're not going to do better, or even come close. It would be compared to an EK43.

Yup. Although you can find them for less if you look.

Here's a G3 for $150:

But that will push beyond his budget with the Ditting burrs costing well upwards of $300 and the cost of burr adapters at about $80.

If you don't want to spend that much, Baratza Virtuoso is a good choice, especially if you can find one used. (I have a Bunn LPG with Ditting burrs and a Virtuoso. The BunnDitting is excellent and the Virtuoso is very good.)

True, depending on how much he pays for the base grinder.
Even at $125ish he could use the Bunn with the current burrs (as long as they're aren't worn out), it would still great grind for the price. Then he could upgrade later once he has the funds.

Do you think the grandmaster 890 comes with ditting burrs?

The 890 does, yes. Not sure how they compare to the kr804 burrs in the Bunnzilla. Might perform identically, might be different.

Same grinder as a Mahlkonig GSS under a different brand if I recall correctly.
