Thanks, that was the info I needed!LukeFlynn wrote:On the base of the Major, there is a block where all the wires are wired into. I traced the microswitch wires from the doser and jumped them, removing the switch from the equation. There are a few threads that go into more detail about this. The Microswitch makes a circuit, which is what allows the motor to run.. without this circuit nothing starts, hence the need for jumping the connections. Also, what grinder are you doing this on? If it's a Major, I wouldn't do the mod without the anti static screen, without it fines and some sort of deflector (The finger guard in most dosers is actually used to deflect grinds) you will have uneven pours. I switched back to my doser until I purchase said screen. I doubt it will be a problem with a SJ because it's slower. Sorry if this all sounds confusing, it's 2 AM and I'm on a phone! XD Hope it helps.

For the major, the hopper lid should work. Not sure about the SJ. In my experience (doserless modded Major), the lid on the funnel isn't needed since the grounds rarely jump out. I have retention losses around 0.1 gram when done properly. Basically just grind into the pf with an OE pf funnel and then sweep down the grounds stuck to the funnel and within the chute. I don't use the static guard or any kind of deflector; just WDM afterwards to prevent channeling.
Basically the cleanest and quickest setup I have ever had - and is amazing in the cup.
EDIT: I made a boo-boo on the cap for the funnel. It should read: The lid for the DOSER should fit the funnel...my bad

It is amazing in the cup if you do WDT, I can't be bothered to. I find the taste identical after WDT with the funnel to doser with no WDT. I think the Doser looks better honestly, which is another reason I went back.properlejdi wrote:For the major, the hopper lid should work. Not sure about the SJ. I cannot help thinking people have this funnel concept stuck in their mind from seeing the Mazzer E versions and such.
But ask yourself is a funnel necessary or even any benefit ?
Many other electronic doser grinders do not use a funnel, just a straight tube between the grind chamber port and the PF. ( EG,.. Macap, Mahlkonig , Compak etc etc)
If it's the brushing out of the grind port that you feel is critical , it is not difficult to devise access for that......and other techniques can avoid it completely !
Mechanical dosers ?? ...aren't they just a relic of traditional pre-electronic commercial machines ?

I have a Compak and the Major (as well as a Vario) and you are right, the funnel is not necessary, it just makes the mess a heck of a lot less. My Compak spit grounds everywhere and single dosing wasn't really an option because you put in 20 g and get 18 g with 1.5 g spread on the counter (I may be a mess - who knows) and 0.5 g offered to the grinder gods. My Vario, not so much, but I haven't tried single dosing; the grounds come out though (as most will know) as a narrow stream so it is easy to direct the grounds where you want.Beenbag wrote:But ask yourself is a funnel necessary or even any benefit ?

NOW the doserless chute for the Mazzer, which is designed for grinding into bags, that looks like it would be all kinds of messy. Not to mention hard(er) to clean out than the opening into the funnel. So, again, is the funnel necessary? Not really, but man is it easy to clean and I have very little loss around my pf. Like I said, a total loss, or retention if you will, of around 0.1g per single dose.
Doser vs Doserless is a whole other thing, and IMO is strictly a preference thing. Some like their dosers, they grind into them whilst doing other things like a cooling flush or wiping the counter or whatever it is you do for your routine. I found it a pain to clean and higher retention, therefore I dropped it in lieu of the funnel. Totally a matter of preference on my part.

Messy grinding is mostly down to organisation of equipment and technique.
I have used several different doser less grinders (Rocky, Compak, Fiorenzato, etc) ,..all of which can be messy , but if you set the PF holder correct, use a dosing funnel (or yogurt pot cut down !).. And change your technique to suit,...Then the mess disappears !
PS... I have also altered all my PF holders to retain the PF "hands free" , so that I can go play with other needs whilst the grinder fills the PF by itself.
