Makes sense that it used to sputter a lot when trying to do a pour, so I'd start the pump and run the steam until water came out then shut off the steam, then pour.
Mine's a 41TEM with toggle switches, and the left one's a 3-way (brew-hot water-steam). To fill the boiler, I have to open the steam valve and set the heater switch to the center for hot water. Then I turn on the pump to bring hot water out of the steam wand.

This is one of the reasons I bought Oscar when he appeared on Craigslist. I love my Lelit, but it's a bit labor-intense to use. Even so, I use it every night after dinner because it makes excellent espresso & microfoam.
