Pump pressure issues

Hi, newbie question here.
I have been rebuilding an ECM michelangelo, and am having some pump pressure issues. The gauge on the machine shows no pressure, but I am not convinced that it is working, so I am working on hooking another gauge up there to check and see if there is any pressure at all.
It is an old version e61 group internals look like this
when I have tried to pull a shot through it takes forever and the bottom of the plunger sticks out the bottom about half an inch. This is why I am not sure about the pressure gauge, there must be some pressure to depress the plunge.
is anyone familiar with these e61's and is that normal, or does it mean that spring is bad?
thanks
