If I recall correctly, I used to pull 9g on the singles. One full pull with the right resistance yielded full crema shot that is no less delicious than the doubles. Sometimes if it blonds earlier just pull the shotglass away. 7.5g or less I couldnt tamp properly nor form a structurally strong puck for extraction. More so if you're using dense light roast.

Yes, grind coarser for more crema, especially if you're choking the machine. Singles aren't that mysterious once you find your single and double dose. I generally don't change the grind to go from one to the other. Stop the shot soon after it starts blonding so you don't overextract.
An "old school Caddy" is a Cadillac made the old way, like one of those from the sixties. You've got a Cadillac of a machine, heavy chrome bumpers and all!

Thanks gents. Adjusted the grind coarser as you suggested Gary, and upped the dose to 9 grams as Sam recommended and one full pull yielded exactly 30 ml with 3 times the crema I was getting previously. And at the risk of hyperbolizing / sounding overcome with enthusiasm, I do believe it is the best shot I have ever created and can only imagine what it will taste like when I learn the subtleties of levers. This is very exciting....the journey begins!
