I am not 100% sure it is a functional unit... I think Cher (DoubleOsoul) is actually checking with the designer to see if it is.
Funny thing though - my June Lee Valley catalog came the next day after this post - and it was sitting on my workbench when my father stopped by. He is an ex-25yr Chicago Fireman, and he saw it and immediately mused "hey what is that thing that has the old fire nozzles attached?" So obviously it has caught more than us coffee geeks attention...
