My favorite, if only, haunt in San Francisco is Hayes Valley. Blue Bottle has a location there, and Ritual is around the corner and not too far away is MA-Velous. Not to mention the restaurants and clothing stores that I very much enjoy. On a walkabout this morning I noticed a new (6 months old) cafe (The 20th Century Cafe - think Paris and Edith Pilaf) - it caught my eye because of the handsome Athena 2-group hammered copper espresso machine. The espresso was surprisingly good for a place that is much more focused on their food and decor, but the latte left a bit to be desired. They serve Blue Bottle coffee. I wouldn't go back just for the espresso - no matter how purty that Athena is, but the strudel.. the STRUDEL! First I watched them roll it, and then I got to savor the smell as it came out of the oven and over to me. All the baked goods are made by their hands. The baked goods are well worth the visit and the espresso just adds that much more reason to go. After you finish, make sure you head directly to the other side of the street and visit the Cheese Cave. If you need French cheese, this is the place to get it (another discovery this morning).

Enjoy!

MMMmmmmm cheese cave. :o Haye's Valley is a pretty cool spot. It's not as hard to find parking around that area either. I'll keep a look out for it the next time I'm down there.
