My thinking was the machine has an auto-shutoff set for 1 minute -- so probably already a margin of safety -- and therefore a few dozen shots at 40 seconds can't be any more harmful than a non-smoker smoking a few dozen cigarettes in his life.Nate42 wrote:That doesn't sound too awful. A good rule of thumb is to try to keep it not too much longer than 30 seconds, and make sure its off for at least as long as it was on.
Mine is rated for 1 min on / 1.5 minute off. Others are rated for 1 min on / 1 min off. Those ratings are for 25C water though, and since water in your tank inside your hot machine will almost certainly be hotter than that, you have to take that "1 minute on" rating with a grain of salt.
In any case, the guys at Chris Coffee didn't even mention a potential pump issue yet and first said to check for flow problems. I was told to not be concerned with the noise level of the pump.

I must say I agree with Chris Coffee.
the problems you described in the first post are usually caused by flow problems on the cold side, and it's not uncommon to find a blockage in the tank caused by chrome flakes!.
The Vibe pump In the mini vivaldi is equipped with a overheat protection (Auto- shut off) , and since This protection hasn't turned off the pump, Then the pump has not been damaged by the 30-40sec shots that you have been pulling out Of your machine.
So I would defiantly advice you to check for flow problems first, if you can't find any, Then you could try to change your pump.

One thing I've realized is that this pressure issue has coincided with an awful bout of channeling lately. I don't know if the pressure inconsistency is causing the channeling, or if the channeling is causing the variation in pressure. I've changed up coffees and have recalibrated my grind -- I'm dosing 20g of beans and it take about 15-16 seconds on my Vario to grind that, so right in the 1.3g/s range. Flow is fine, shots are in the 30s range. Again I checked pressure during backflush and I'm at a very steady 9.5 bars.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong -- while I've always had the usual small dead spot here and there, I've never had channeling this bad and have no idea how to fix it. (Could it be as simple as I need a new basket?)
