At a picnic today I was distracted and didnt cover the water I was boiling so I ended up with only enough for 1 and a half Aeropresses for full mugs (and i wasted gas). As I had already started pouring the second one, I ran the short AP like usual though and pressed it out then quickly heated some more water and poured it in.
The two mugs (full AP vs topped up concentrate) were different... The topped up one actually tasted better with a noticeable chocolate flavour. I think I'm going to continue this way for a bit.
Guat volcan from SM
17g ground hario mini coarser than espresso 5 clicks?
Able disc fine
Pour, stir, 55 secs, stir, 70 sec press slowly out
One filled up to about 4 line give or take some foam
One half way then topped up after

Maybe you just hit exactly the right extraction with the half-filled Aeropress. With less water you extract less. Brew temperature drops faster too.
My guess would be you can achieve similar results with your normal amount of water and a coarser grind and/or a lower brew temp.
Cheers,
Alex
