Your actions were correct.

The OPV is attached to a 1/8" BSPP ell via an adaptor. You can grasp the body of the ell with a 10 mm wrench or a small adjustable wrench to apply a counter hold while you unscrew the OPV or OPV and adaptor as a unit.

Okay got it out. Virtually no scale, but the rubber parts (which were very hard) were coated with a viscous silty black substance that I assume is the gaskets/rubber bits gradually disintegrating. I am currently soaking it in vinegar, which I guess probably isn't going to help me much. Is there a way to replace the the rubber parts/o-rings or should I just order a new OPV? Thanks again for all your help with this.

Edit: Nevermind... found a previous thread where you address this, and all the parts at Chris' Coffee...

Well, I'm happy you found something as I am simply not good at that. Replacing the OPV in its entirety would (obviously) be "case closed". However, the OPV housing is essentially indestructible so, simply replacing the valve and o-ring for the adjustment mechanism should do the trick.

As you can easily imagine, problems similar to this crop up all the time and it is a "user call" on juggling parts and shipping costs . . . not easy . . . as I make mistakes all the time in this regard.
