Your opinions on baskets - ridgeless and otherwise

Postby Jebez on Thu Apr 21, 2011 7:06 pm

I've just purchased an Quickmill Andreja and wanted to get some feedback on baskets that might be an improvement over those supplied with the machine.
I've read about ridgeless Marzocco / Synesso style baskets and wanted to hear from anyone who uses these.
Are your extractions any better?... and why? Or is it all just myth.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and advice!

I use a Synesso style triple all the time for a few different reasons.
- Fits a higher dose than my stock basket, and is effective for the range of doses i most commonly use.
- I single dose with my grinder and find it easier to dose and prepare the puck in the basket alone instead of the pf+basket. Can't do it without a ridgeless because snapping the basket back into the pf would disturb the puck.
- I feel like I get better extractions with it but I can't prove it. Something about the way the sides are gently sloped and rounded into bottom makes sense when you are looking at it compared to some of the baskets with a more defined corner.

A basket, is a basket. Different brands can have slightly different depths so you can get more coffee into them but a new basket will not fix things like distribution issues. The most common is the Faema style double with the sloped base, the marzocco ridgeless is the same basket just a little deeper. The marzocco triple is a straight sided basket, a marzocco double is also straight sided but is 57mm so you need a smaller tamper to make it work. If you simply dont like the positive snap you get from a standard ridged basket you can take the retaining spring out of the portafilter and drop the basket in. Baskets have been discussed at length. If you run a search for basket types or portafilter baskets you will get pages of discussion.
