Working with the ridged La Marzocco double basket

Postby mitch236 on Mon Aug 30, 2010 3:15 pm

I have been trying to work with Black Cat beans this week. Malachi recommends a 17gm dose but when I try to tamp that amount in my ridged double basket, my tamper hits the ridge. Is that a big issue? The coffee tastes good and I don't seem to have any big extraction issues.

La Marzocco aficionados recommend a 57mm tamper for the reason you cited.

Or a Faema/Synesso basket.

I use 57mm tamper just for that. I prefer ridged basket to Synesso ones but if dose is at 16 grams or less then 14 gram Synesso is right tool.

Interesting.....I use the Synesso ridge-less triple and double baskets and a 58+ size Torr european curve tamper and it fits perfectly. Their 58+ size is 58.6mm. Doesn't scrape the sides and does a much better job at pushing the grinds from the inside edge of the basket. It nutates and polishes perfectly. The slight curved seal on the edges is effective as well.

I have 58mm Espro and Speedster tampers that I seldom use.

I have a few Synesso baskets and have to say, I'm not in love with them. I seem to have better extractions on my equipment with LM baskets.

I guess I have to order a 57!!

The standard LM double basket takes a 57mm tamper. The ridgeless double and straight sided triple take a 58mm tamper.
