Water Tests Questions

Postby Nik on Sun Sep 06, 2009 2:06 pm

In preparation for the Alex Duetto that I will be getting next week I have been trying to absorb the pour over technique vs plumbed. Plumbing makes more sense but I felt it could be delayed a bit until I was sure the placement in our kitchen was set. I have read as much about water conditioning/treatment as I can find but I am confused by the results I got.

I picked up WHETK Home Water Quality Test Kit this morning at Lowes and ran all the tests. It appears that our tap water is good but I would like some thoughts and direction from those that have been through it.

Chlorine 0
PH 7
Alkalinity 0
Hardness 3 gr / 50 ppm
Copper 0
Iron 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0

If these were your readings in your home how would you react? Do the readings appear to be accurate? What filtration, if any, would you install to use your espresso machine.

Your comments would be appreciated.

I need to mix 2/3 distilled with 1/3 tap to get 50 ppm, so your water should be good as far as scaling is concerned. How does your water taste?

If you Google on "<your town> water quality report", you'll usually find the federally-mandated report for your area. For example, "greensboro nc water quality report" led me to this announcement, which says you should have received a report in the mail, and this online Greensboro 2008 Drinking Water Quality Test Results (PDF).

Thank you Scott for the reply.

The taste is fine. In fact we have been running our drinking water through a PUR faucet attachment but after these test results I question if it's even necessary.

So, you think if I just tapped into the water line without any filtration I should not need any additional filtration? That would be wonderful if true.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you Dan.

Now that I look at it I do remember receiving it. Good information.
