Spitz.me wrote:Dan, maybe my Vario is a POS, but mine slips out of optimal grind settings often enough. I actually find that it happens all at once, just one day it'll be horrible, but it takes me a bit of trial and error to really figure it out. Sometimes you need to change dose as the bean ages, right? So, I don't know what or if you need to worry about anything depending on when you bought it. Mine was a 'first-adopter' purchase and it's also the second, as the first was horrible out of the gate with slipping sliders... People can speak to the customer service and grind quality they get with the Vario and Baratza products, but I'd rather something that's reliable.
I received a tool from Baratza that allows me to 'move the burrs' back into proper setting...
Sorry for the OT in my own thread.
Sorry to bring up an old thread and sorry if OP has already moved on from this, but it sounds like the Vario just needed those shims that Baratza offers, especially if it was a 4500 serial number or below.
As far as spritzing with the VST, I also experienced this quite a bit but I remedied it by making sure my grind was finer than normal, distribution was nice and level, and tamp was a little firmer than I normally do (normally, it is less than 30lbs). Also, I felt that beans that were too fresh resulted in major spritzing.
