Vibiemme Thermometer and portafilter question

Postby mindless_fool on Sun Jan 03, 2010 4:47 pm

I want to know if EricS E61 grouphead thermometer adapter works on my vibiemme. As per this post No More Guesswork! Naked Truth of E61 Temperature Revealed you need a hex nut, but my allen nut kinda counter sinks into the grouphead (see pics)Image
would it work? or what would i need to do to modify it to work? Also as you can see in the second pic it seems the hole for the bolt is drilled off center from left towards the right. Image

Also my portafilter that i have a double spout on is annoying me. when its fully tight the spouts are perpendicular to what makes sense.Image
when i put it in the right position its loose and wiggles all over the place. What can be done to fix this? i tried with my other portafilter before i made it bottomless, would teflon tape be a good idea? want it to look like this:

Thanks for any help...

Yes, he stocks one that fits the Vibiemme nicely. IIRC, the hex nut is milled with a deeper insert to accommodate the Vibiemme's grouphead.

Telflon tape, copper crush washers from your local plumbing supply, Loctite green... they all work. See Problems with loose portafilter spout or Locking down the portafilter spouts for details.

For sure, the digital thermometer adaptor kit fits the Vibiemme.

I'll even throw in a "proper" copper washer BUT in the event you need the dimensions, the spout threads on almost all (?) portafilters are 3/8"-19 BSPP which have an outside diameter of 0.656" = ~16.7 mm.

I have one of Eric's group thermocouple and used it in my VBM review. You just need a thicker spacer/washer which he includes if you let him know it for a VBM. I will use both a Scace and Eric's thermocouple when doing profiling on a machine so I can see what the group vs portafilter temperature differences are. Also handy when checking warmup times.

Please do, because the temp drop from the head temp to the PF temp is one thing that I have never been able to totally nail down.

I know that would only be for that head and group, but I would like to see it. And if we can make a traveling HX to Scace temp then that would be something to work from.

I would love to be part of a head temp EricS temp vs Scace test on 58mm heads.

Now that would be something to do.

That's a great chart for a VBM, now if you could do it for an Isomac Tea please:)

Eric's thermo works great on VBM groupheads
regarding the portafilter
you can remove the spout use some food grade thread lock or teflon tape
