Trick to making tea with Gaggia Classic

Postby workinghard on Sun Feb 21, 2010 12:44 pm

EDIT: After doing the following my steam wand had some pretty intense leaking while pulling shots, despite being fully closed. It has stopped leaking now, but I do not recommend the following.

Well, I have to run some more tests, but preliminary results were promising.

I tried to make some tea yesterday and came across the complaint that others have stated, it only puts out the water at about 160 degrees.

So today I tried with 6 ounces, and I applied our steaming method on the classic to tea brewing. I saw that when switching both buttons for hot water the light stayed off. I wasnt sure if that really mattered on how water mode, but I left it running with the steam wand closed for about 15 seconds, then I opened it. The temp of the water was a steady 200 degrees for the full duration.

I tried it again with 10 ounces, and it appeared that the final temp was 190. However, It seemed that the top layer of water appeared to be cooler? I need to run some more tests, but it looks promising anyway.

Any thoughts?

I assume you are using the Classic as a tea kettle to warm water and not a brewing device. If so, my only thought was "Why bother?" Wouldn't it be better to use a hotpot or microwave? The Gaggia boilers are too small to draw enough hot water at the proper temperature for brewing tea.

Well using this method it seems to heat it up fast enough. HOWEVER I am editing my original post. I shortly thereafter pulled 3 doubles and the whole time my steam wand was leaking, despite being fully closed. After running about 15ounces of water through the steam wand it finally stopped. But...I dont think I will plan to use it again for such a manner. Eventually I will just get a zojirushi for hot water.
