Tipping the scales

Postby allon on Wed Aug 10, 2011 9:11 am

I finally got myself some 0.1g scales, one for the office espresso machine and one for home.

I gotta say, I've been overdosing and grinding too coarse. Instant improvement with the double basket at 16g. Pulled my finest lever shots yet this morning with a "leftovers" blend of sulawesi/Sumatra/brazil roasted three days ago. Still lingering on the palate 20 minutes later.

Also no grinds retained on the Pharos...17.2g in, 17.2g out.

I think you have the right idea. One, I'm trying to remember to follow. As far as starting at around 17g for a double and going from there. My first 5-8 lbs of espresso I was aiming for 19.5-21g simply because it filled my basket to what "looked right", using the same beans.
Fresh out of the roaster: SM Ethiopian Yirg Grade 1, Compass Ethiopian Sidama
Next batch: Guatemala Geisha...
