They do work as a distribution tool (with thwacking), but IMHO it's a suboptimal and over-engineered solution.

+1, except for the noise

Neither here nor there on the original topic, but since it's been brought up numerous times, I really like the thwacking technique shown in this video of a buncha En Wye See barista gathering in a basement. From about 45 sec to 1:00.
It brings the noise level way down, helps with ratchet misses, and probably helps a bit with the RSI*. I'd put my money on it being rather nicer to the entire mechanism as well.

Thumb on the screw head on the front of the doser, fingers on the lever, and squeeze instead of pull.

*Probably only in that it changes what you have been doing.

this works well it also keeps the grinder from scooting around while you dose.. yes even a mazzer major can move on the table from gettin wild on the doser.

if you unscrew the screw a bit it works well. i also have a coffeelab tamper and keep the spare washer spacer on that screw it helps with comfort and keeps the spacer handy but safe.

cheers.

Both of mine will either wander or wobble when I get a little too enthusiastic. I've had to shore up the shelf that they're sitting on (on top of my microwave) because the wobble was like working the shelf back and forth, and started to loosen it from it's moorings. Before I saw the vid, I had adopted a non-period specific thwacking technique so that the Majors wouldn't get into a pendulum type of rhythm and tear the house up!
