Sink that First Shot - Page 5

Could it be the detergent backflush? Just kidding, I am sure that it wasn't the first wash you did.

I'll continue sinking the first one for as long as I have enough collected scrap and let you try the Pre-shot backflush. I am sure that Ian will also. Let's see what we'll get in the long run.

No difference as in, both pretty much clear or both contaminated? I get very irregular backflush on my Vivaldi. Sometime it looks like there is full shot (exageration) gushing out and sometime there is only a few mililiters trickling out.

Went home for lunch and pulled another shot, this time 6 grams tamped in the blind basket. It held together in the basket, the tamped 4 grams this morning didn't. Another great shot, but not quite what this morning's shot was.

To be more specific about the improvement, it is more about what you don't taste, than what you do.

Both were just a sploosh of slightly murky water. I wasn't too concerned with the volume, but more with whether, as Marshall feared, the blind basket contained a lot more 'coffee' It didn't.

I am not sure what this is suppose to show. That no dissolved solid goes passed the group screens? Well the video is not good enough for use to tell.

Nick, perhaps you could describe what we were supposed to gather from that video? I liked it, and the camera work was rather remarkable (and I'm jealous of the machine!) but I'm sure I missed the point.

I am not concerned with the volume that comes out either but if the volumes coming out are different, than it may affect the concentration of what comes out and should be taken into account. But it is just a detail for now.

I wouldn't expect that any difference in dissolved solids and oils would be noticeable in a visually significant manner. And also, it is not comes out that is a concern but what may stay in.

It is a unknown. Maybe an insignificant one. Or even better one that gets completely cleaned out at the regular detergent backflush. But still an unknown.

Maybe, we are in the "normal", unfortunate, but normal variation between shot to shot. Maybe tomorrow I experience a more positive improvement. Let's keep trying and share...

I guess I am confused as to what guys you seem to think is the additional problem here. You're positing that pressure relief from backflushed coffee, which is not as extracted as a shot of coffee that is complete, causes additional... oil buildup in the feed tube/solenoid?

My point with the video is that it's practically the same thing as pulling a shot. You get to a similar pressure, you end up with a 'puck,' and the screen clears just fine, with no unusually large amount of gunk behind it. Not much to say other than that. Are you guys saying that someone needs to do a test over time of 2 identical machines, using one normally and the other one with coffee backflushes, to see if it causes problems? Because that's not ever going to happen. And if someone reports issues with it, based on what I've seen of it today, I'd be a lot more suspect of their cleaning regime than this 'seasoning' regime....
