Single vs. double espresso: Are grind changes required?

Postby janszoon on Wed Apr 07, 2010 3:50 pm

Hello there.

Well I have been using my Gaggia Classic coupled with the mini-macho for about a week now. I have been really impressed with the results. Its a perfect entry point into the home barista space for me.

I have been experimenting with grinds, tamps and beans and getting some great shots.

The single shot extraction is looking really good, approx 25 secs for 30ml. Taste and crema are all good.
I have also experimented with the double-basket, using the same grind, tamp and bean but the extraction is varied.

When switching from single to double, does the grind setting need to be adjusted usually or is it more coffee (dosing) only? Anything else I need to consider for doubles?

Cheers,

J

Unless you're very, very lucky and got a pair of baskets (one single and one double) that just work perfectly together, you're going to have to adjust grind when going from one to the other, which is why most serious coffee shops don't bother with the single. The single also has a reputation (deserved or not) of being harder to get good extractions from without channeling, as there's supposedly less room for error in the dosing, distribution and tamp. If you're getting good results from singles as a beginning barista, kudos to you! Once you find the right grind for the double, you shouldn't have any problems.
