A little post script to this thread: I tried the melamine sponge mentioned in the above linked threads a while ago.
A moist cloth or a cloth with vodka works fine for coffee splatter and water marks, but there is the eventual build up of oxidation. After a year and a half of coffee making, the Mondiale developed a dull film on the cup tray and the surrounding surfaces. This was impervious to any cloth wiping.
After the tip in the other threads, I tried the melamine sponge (Magic Eraser), and was pleasantly surprised to find it cut the film easily and quickly, leaving a mirror finish.
Melamine is hard, but in foam form is very forgiving - you'd have to scrub like L to make any visible microscratchs - so a nice cleaning tool for polished stainless steel.
