Quick clean Americano with HX espresso machine

Postby godlyone on Thu Sep 16, 2010 12:31 pm

The problem I have with HX machines is that the boiler water sits around for way too long. This is great to prevent scale (if you were constantly using the hot water tap), but leaves a bad taste in the boiler water (not the HX water which is clean since it is continually used).

When I make Americanos, I do not want to use the hot water tap for this very reason - the americanos end up having an off taste to them.

Solution: Get one cup of water (in your favorite mug) from the water filter, steam it using the steam from your machine, once it gets up to boiling, start preparing your shot.

It is quicker this way than firing up the electric tea kettle or other water heating device. And since your machine is already on - you might as well use that steam power!

I just use the water from the group head flush. Then again, I make my americanos small so the 4ish oz I flush works out perfect.....assuming I keep the screen cleaned :) Steaming the water is a great idea though. Hadn't thought of that. I agree about the steam boiler water being off. I made a cup of tea from it the other day and took one sip before dumping it out.

I too use the water from the group (HX water) if I am making an Americano. Seems easier than using the steam wand.

The hot water tap isn't used for much. Preheating the occasional soup bowl. Or to wet a cleaning towel. Convenient boiler drain, to partially drain the boiler vis a vis reducing boiler scaling.

Personally, I use my hot water tap. I dont notice any bad, or even different taste then if I used my water boiler or a microwave. But, I use the tap often, so maybe that makes a difference.

For some reason, I've found that "steamed" water tastes at least as funny as boiler water if not more. Grouphead water isn't a bad option, but make sure the path is clean of spent grounds.

I know its a different machine but...

I believe for at least the Gaggia Classic, if you run your Steam wand before pulling the espresso shot the water will be too high for the shot and more chance of burning the shot. Is this the case?

Ive heard if you do a quick flush from the group head the temp drops quickly and your good togo?

Cheers
