Non-espresso but vac-pot question

When using a vac-pot, when is the correct time to add the ground coffee? As soon as water appears in the upper pot, when upper pot is filled with hot water or other?

I have an inexpensive Bodum Santos, which includes a stand for the upper half to rest in while the lower half is on the stove heating. When the water is steaming but not yet boiling, I carefully insert the upper half with the ground coffee already in it. Searching the net, I found a good how-to article, Vac Pot Brewing with the Bodum Santos that covers the rest of the steps.

I've got a different model vacpot (check out the Yama article on the same site), but the same principles apply. For impatient types (like me): preheat the water in a kettle or the microwave to almost boiling, pour into the bottom globe, attach the top (filled with ground coffee), and then set the whole shebang on the heating element. Since the water is almost boiling to begin with, you won't have to wait long for the magic to begin.
