Newbie question...Difference in steam wand tips?

Postby Socalsteve on Thu Jan 27, 2011 2:00 pm

Hi all,

Just curious if a 4 hole .9mm makes a difference between a 2 hole .10mm or a single standard tip? Or???

Is there a difference in the way these different tips create microfoam-stretch and heat the milk?

And, if there is, please explain how. I am really curious to know the differences.

Also, while we are on the subject, does the amount of pressure that comes from the wand make a difference in the way milk is foamed, stretched and heated up?

As always, thank you all in advance,

Steve

Steam pressure is the key. The number and size of the holes effects the velocity and volume of steam. The number and diameter of the holes must be matched to the capacity of the boiler. If they are over sized you will get week anaemic steam without enough velocity to swirl the milk in the pitcher. The boiler will also loose steam faster than the heater can recover. I am sure there is a formula to calculate the optimum boiler size/heater wattage/steam tip opening but it is probably a guarded secret.
