Newbie "puck" question...

Postby Socalsteve on Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:27 pm

Hi all,

What does it mean (if anything) when after you pull a shot, the puck sticks to the screen? Easy enough to get it off with a little water, but just wondering what this means.

As always, thank you all in advance,

Possibilities include:

- Too much coffee in the basket/dose too large
- Too much water remaining in basket, due to too fine a grind

That said, none of it matters if it tastes good and this occurs consistently with the coffee that you use. When it comes to. Being a barometer of success, puckology is quite low on the totem pole. Instead, look at flow rate and color. If you have a bottomless pf, watch the shot develop. These indicators are much more reliable, IMHO.

Very little other than you have a lot of coffee jammed in that basket. I am assuming that is intentional. You may want to go through your process, lock the portafilter into the group then remove it without pulling a shot. Look at the dry puck. Is it indented, screen impression, does it look scraped, are there cracks in the puck? If the puck looks to have been disturbed by the shower screen you may want to cut your dose by a gram to start. If the puck is scraping the shower screen you may be developing some channeling from the disruption of the coffee bed. If everything looks good, and your coffee tastes good, dont worry about it.
