Instead they use a thick chunk of brass to conduct heat from the boiler to the group. I have found that the group on my machine is very slow to warm up, runs a little cool, and actually needs a very short heating flush rather than a long cooling flush. The heat exchanger volume is also very small and is rapidly filled with cold water if you flush too long. I performed some temperature tests using a portafilter thermocouple and found that a two second flush followed immediately with the shot seemed to deliver the best temperature stability.

I have a bz99 and have done some testing also and found the same as above.

I also was doing longish cooling before pulling shots, but now just a few secs of cooling.

Hey ethorson does your bz99 cycle (orange light comes on) often, like after a couple of shots?

My BZ35 does not have a light indicating when the heating element is on. There is a green light that is on whenever the machine in plugged in and a yellow light showing that the power switch is on and the boiler level above the minimum. I added a PID controlled group heater to address the slow warmup and poor temperature regulation of the group. One mod is never enough so I also added electronic pressure control for preinfusion and a dual pressure gauge.

Wow sounds and looks good.

The bz99 is newish to me 3months, I installed a pid set up on my silvia with great success, I used 2 pids (why? because I found a deal on two single set point pids) one for brew and one for steam w/ one ssr. It works great.

I am very interested in your mods.....Apparently in my case modifying one machine is not enough..

Does the BZ 35 come standard with preinfusion or did you achieve preinfusion by add the electronic pressure controller?

My BZ35 did not have preinfusion so I designed a system to control the pump pressure with a simple timer circuit. The details are in this post: Adding preinfusion to a rotary pump machine.
