My experience with a two hole steam tip.

Postby UFGators on Mon Sep 28, 2009 2:10 pm

Im sure everyone has heard of this mod from this forum or other forums, but I decided to take my spaziale's four hole steam tip and plug two of the holes with the ends of toothpicks. I was a bit nervous when I saw the wood stuck up in the holes (I bet it is near irreversable), but when I saw the added control it gave me when steaming milk (even soy milk). I stopped worrying. I have been using a 12 oz motta pitcher filled half way for a single cappuccino but with the smaller quantity of milk I was steaming I was accidentally stretching the milk to almost overfill the pitcher. I can open up the steam valve all of the way without having to worry about my spaziale blasting milk everywhere. With two of the holes plugged I am getting a lot less volume and a whole lot more compact foam. I wonder if there is anything else I can mod from it's original factory setup (I think I have a problem).

The is also a smaller four hole tip available (0.9mm versus 1.2mm). I find this works better for smaller volumes of milk.

Cheers

I am already using the smaller holed tip, just plugged two of the holes. Seems to work well with the 12 oz pitcher, we will see how it does with the 20oz pitcher tomorrow

When I started doing this, I was just as worried. It was simply going to be a stop-gap measure until I got the new tip and drilled my own holes in it (I had a FIVE-holer for a twelve ounce pitcher with three or three-and-a-half ounces of milk...). It worked so well though, that over a year later, that pristine new no-hole tip is still in my drawer.
If you want to remove the toothpick bits, simply unscrew your tip, and push the pointy bits out from the inside. It really is too easy, so you can stop worrying!
