If I understand his diagram and dial in recommendations correctly, it would be:

1) lock in dose (based on the amount of coffee you want to make)
2) choose a yield and get in time ball park (for ex: 27-32 secs). (extract more or less by increasing or decreasing yield to achieve correct balance - so you would not change grind if you are in the time ballpark, just let the shot run longer or cut it shorter. (so you would be in the green zone, in the diagram)
Now you can focus on going to higher levels in the green zone.
3) Time (grind finer and finer to get to your yield. So this will make shots run longer. Until you grind finer and it no longer helps but turn backwards and extraction decreases
