Googling for "white rouge" (a term seemingly in common - if wrong - usage) will probably find the type of compound cannonfodder recommended.

My neighbour is a manufacturing jeweller working with precious metals - must ask him about it some day.

We call it jewelers rouge its used to polish such things as rings which are soft metals
However stainless steel is too hard for jewelers rouge to polish the steel itself but will probably take off the tarnish OK

After cleaning
This is what I do for future protection
I use Glassplexin. It is a paint, glass, polished steel protection polish
So shiny you need your sunglasses on
