Lattes with U.S. Barista Champ Heather Perry

Postby HB on Sat Mar 21, 2009 1:34 pm

Thanks Jeff for the pointer via his Twitter... a brief introduction to pouring and steaming technique. But using a Moka pot? :?

gotmilk wrote:Seasoned barista Heather Perry teaches the average Joe and Jane how to make a homemade latte for as little as $0.35. An average 12 oz. cup of latte can have as much as 1/3 of the daily recommended calcium intake, making it not only a delicious treat, but a beverage that is also good for you.

I can't help but notice that both Kyle Glanville & Heather use a Capresso Infinity to grind for espresso in their How To videos! Maybe I should have hung onto mine??

Yes, I also noticed this interesting pairing with the La Marzocco GS/3. Perhaps it is product placement.

Al Critzer, Florida's Cimbali rep and the inventor of Al's rule for ristretto pours, was a big fan of these grinders.

About half of them grind fine enough for commercial espresso, about a quarter stay fine enough to keep grinding for commercial espresso. That quarter is noticeably better than the low end Baratzas. No idea if they beat the Lux. I use one for press and cupping since it's just about as good as anything else at that job, along with being fast, quiet, and easy cleaning. For the sort of gigs shown on this film, I think it's main claim to fame is being very light and very small.

Looks a lot like product placement, for quite a few items. If a mocha pot is all you got, it will do the job. Still better than most cafe's.

Notice how light her tamp was.

Ignoring the (very real) possibility of "product placement," what bothers me is not the Capresso or the moka pot, but rather the LM. If this is truly a "How To" for the proverbial masses, those "masses" are far more likely to have a Capresso or to own a moka pot than they are to own a GS3 . . .

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Jason

As the GS3 is one the less portable 'portable' machines, and this looks to be in the roasting room judging from the bags of coffee, I would guess the LM is more a crime of opportunity, what they have available on site.

I agree -- I think it's all "whatever was handy," but talk about "mixed messages"!

I think this video is ridiculous. Its just a commercial for milk and not so very helpful for people that want to know how to do a latte at home and don't have a gs/3. The second drink made...must taste terrible. I was looking forward to the way she would prepare the milk...but nothing...
By the way, it is just not true, that you get the same amount of good ingredients like vitamins, minerals etc from whole fat and skimmed milk.

I think everyone is reading more into this than is intended. It is a PSA on drinking more milk, a calcium thing. Not a tutorial on how to pull shots or make perfect microfoam for your drink. That is like complaining that the truck hooked to a trailer in a beef counsel commercial is too small to realistically pull the load represented in the trailer. You miss the entire point about eating more beef. It is a drink more milk, it is good for you. The GS3, it is probably the one she won in the USBC and simply what she has.
