This one wasn't so much of a fluke.

After loads of milk of practice I can come up with this. I added a little chocolate powder onto the crema:

Here's my final entry in the Wholelattelove art contest.

I tried to show an overview of the whole process, not just the pour. I realize the art isn't up to the highest standards, but I think it came out OK. We'll see what the Wholelattelove people think.

FYI, the contest that inspired this thread is now accepting votes for best latte art video.

PS: I tried to convince the contest organizer to allow the substitution of a Mazzer Mini P, figuring that many HB members already have an espresso machine at or above a Gaggia Classic. No dice. Maybe next time...

Thanks for the update, Dan. I was wondering if they were ever going to get around to letting us vote on this.

A Mazzer Mini P would have been awesome. I've already moved beyond the Classic myself, but another Classic would be nice as a backup/travel machine.

Looks pretty similar to last year. This year's prize is a Gaggia Baby. There are now categories for beginner and professional. You can only vote once, unlike last year's American Idol-like voting system.

I'll be interested to see what people come up with this year. Last year had some good submissions, although the eventual winner's entry seemed pretty weak to me. Maybe that's just sour grapes, though.

So I got a weird message on my YouTube page today, from someone named "Mischa", purporting to be from a German TV station that wants to use my latte art videos. Here's the entire message.

Hi there,

We're working for German DW-TV (Germany's foreign network that is broadcastet worldwide) on a new show about user generated content and one of the reports we're planning is a clip collection about coffee art. During my research I saw your clips on Youtube, which are really amazing.

Now we really would love to broadcast parts of these clips in our show and hope very much that your are interested in this idea. The only problem is, that we only broadcast clips in TV-quality which means that you would have to send me a DVD or upload the clips on of of the common sites like http://www.megaupload.com.

Please get back to me and tell me what you think about this request, I look forward to hearing from you! Of course we would pay you a small handling fee for your efforts.

Warm regards from Germany

Mischa

I don't know what to make of this. Is it some kind of scam? If so, I don't really see the point, unless they're hoping to get me to provide personal information. If it's for real, I guess it's kind of flattering, though I don't think my latte art compares to many of the people who have posted videos on YouTube and Google video.

Anyone have any opinion as to whether I should respond to this?

Given the e-mail domain matches the claim, I see no reason to doubt the legitimacy of the request. While unlikely, it's possible that the domain is spoofed. If you examine the e-mail headers, you can confirm the IP address maps back to that domain. It isn't really that surprising, I've been contacted a few times for similar requests (e.g., permission to republish photos and article excerpts).
